Winter Fishing is now upon us and the season looks like a good one. The Winter spawning fish move in the rivers with every drop of the barometric pressure which indicates more rain, and sometimes dirty water.
Woolly
Bugga the rivers and lake fishing. Caddis,
Flashback, Hare and Copper, and Carols Favourite are used in all the
rivers.
Summer Fishing can be exciting, large brown trout move up into the lower Tongariro to begin the long journey up the river ready to begin their spawning about May. The access can also be quite exciting but the results will always surprise you. These small streams open out into large rock pools which sometimes hold three and four fish. The water is clear so the visablity is almost always very good.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A new carpark has been made at the south end of Te Rangiita and tracks up the left bank of the river, right to the 'Cliff Pool'. The month of July so far has been pretty good, the rain has been here again and this ofcause means fresh fish in all of the rivers and streams. The mornings during the past week have been very cold and frosty. These conditions slow the fish in the early morning but as the day warms so does the fishing. All of the rivers and streams are clean and clear so the fishinf has started to get a bit harder. We are all having to work alittle harder for a result. There has still been the stray brown trout being caught. These fish will now be moving back down the river after May spawning. For the international visiter who will fish, only two fishing licences are necessary for all fresh water fishing. In both the South island and the North island a 'Fish and Game licence ' will cover and the Taupo licence can be purchased at any tackle shop in the area. Enjoy your visit to the Tongariro area and do remember your fishing licence. The Department of Conservation have written a couple of new rules into this years regulations so be sure to read the back of your licence.
